  • For deep frozen product, use ‘t’ type container only. Dry ice must be loaded in both the dry ice bunker (20%) and cargo area (80%) to maintain -20°C. Re-icing the bunker only will not maintain -20°C
  • Since ‘t’ type container does not heat, the container is to be stored in an environment where temperature is at least 10°C to avoid overcool. Avoid exposure to extreme heat or direct sunlight since under such situation dry ice consumption is accelerated. Exposure to temperature 30°C above the set temperature should be limited to 2 hours.
  • One of the following process controls is required to use the ‘t’ type container for Controlled Room Temperature products:

    a. The product is packaged in an insulated overpack before loading in the container.

    b. Aircraft temperature is above 20°C with dry ice in the container bunker.

    c. B744P not applicable.

  • ‘t’ type container require cargo hold ventilation and temperature control during flight.

The following information must be shown on Air Waybills and booking record for time and temperature sensitive cargo:
  1. The storage temperature requirement in the “Handling Information” box of Air Waybills must be as follows: “Keep between X and Y degrees Celsius whenever possible during transportation and storage” where X and Y are respectively the minimum and the maximum transportation (external or ambient) temperature.
  2. Only single temperature range is indicated on one Air Waybill. Under no circumstance are air waybills to be completed with unreasonable instructions or specific temperature conditions. Entries such as “Keep between 2 ~ 8°C at all times” and “Maintain at below 5°C” are not acceptable.
  3. The exact description of the time and temperature sensitive cargo: e.g. Consol. (pharmaceuticals, vaccine…etc) or pharmaceuticals, vaccine.
  4. Dry ice is classified as dangerous goods. When shipped in or with cargo as a refrigerant, the air waybill must contain the entries (e.g. UN 1845 Carbon Dioxide, solid. 2 x 20 kg) required under the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations.

Shipments containing temperature sensitive cargo are not accepted:
  1. In consolidations unless all packages are assigned into one temperature range as shown in the Air Waybills.
  2. In different temperature ranges unless separate Air Waybills are issued for each product requiring the same temperature range.
  3. Whenever possible, all packages should be clearly marked with their contents and the correct temperature requirement range (in Celsius).

Cargo requiring temperature control, if not shipped in active packaging systems, should be adequately packed in high quality passive packaging, able to sustain the required internal temperature levels independently (by the use of dry ice, gel pack or other phase change materials) for the defined period (e.g. 48 or 72 hrs) or entire journey of transport.
The following passive packaging must be handled in accordance with IATA DGR/TCR/PCR:
  1. The package containing dry ice must be so constructed to permit the release of carbon dioxide gas to prevent a build-up of pressure (1 kg dry ice will convert to 530L of gas) that could rupture the packaging.
  2. The storage (ambient or external) temperature for package containing dry ice (cooling only) must be maintained at least +5°C above the optimal product (internal) temperature to prevent product within the package from “overcool” (e.g. Vaccine 2 ~ 8°C packed with dry ice and stored in cold room with set temperature 5°C for 24 hrs, the internal temperature will drop below 0°C and vaccine will become frozen).

Wide body aircraft temperature control range is about 5 ~ 25°C. Temperature control facility is not available at plane side, cargo holding area, to-and-from warehouse and in narrow body aircraft. Cargo exposure to various ambient temperatures may occur in flight or on ground.
It’s recommended that time and temperature sensitive cargo offered for carriage are pre-cooled and adequately packed to withstand normal air transport conditions, and protect from damage due to change in climate, temperature, altitude or any natural/ordinary exposure which may prevail during flight or on ground.
